This guy is a archer of mine. Apprentice farmer from Haern. Guy packs a punch - and his fellow archers are of the same stats.
And this woman right here, is part of my tank squad.

Personally I won't hire any NPC that doesn't have at least 2 strength if I plan to use them in combat. Later on I look for 4 or 5 minimum strength so they can use T2 melee weapons, better shields and have more hit points.
Most of the abilities on the right side don't matter much because they will level those up fairly quickly even without books just by doing those tasks. The key stats to look at are their combat related stats on the left. And if they have decent starting stats (like a 5 or 7 maximum), give them books and keep giving them books to get those stats up faster.
Use blunt weapons early on. They do a lot more damage to heavier armor which is what brigands wear. Also as suggested above, perhaps put your archers into a 2nd group and keep them back away from the melee.
You should not fight the enemy head-on, but use fences and toilets to take advantage of the terrain.
This guy gets it.
This is the most important thing you need to know when liberating a town. I would also add potential followers with higher stats tend to be in southern village, such as Horndean or Farnworth. Keep saving those old coins and wolf teeth and sold them to the elders.
The weird quest timing would make you to think otherwise, but liberation is pretty much the end-game content. So you really need to use everything you have to win, that includes the best armor/weapon you can get, and the best foods
Renown and trust are two different things.
What you are thinking of, is the status (friendship, protector, bellwright) - a good suggestion for raising that: you need to reach T2 (you dont need apprentice workers for this) and research the VILLAGE improvements. You can also use coins, but they are scarce and it goes slow. The second I hit friendship in a village, I can place down these gardens and reach bellwright status within a days work. :)
You then place these village improvements INSIDE the radius of the village.
Hint: The village garden gives you 300 trust each, and only requires 10 flax, 12 mud and 20 wood. :D
Renown is a whole other ballgame - you get that from killing bandits, doing quests, killing brigands (my favorite!) and by placing trophies - you can also delete the trophies immediately after placing them, so that they do not take up space.
Boar trophies gives 125 renown each
Stag 125
Wolves 100
You will need both a specific status - either friend, protector or bellwright, but also a certain amount of renown, in order to hire someone in a village :) It should say in the NPC window what trust level you need and how much renown you have to pay.
Tip: You can always expell the villager again, and get renown back. :)
So if I get it right the renown is only affecting your own people? And trophies can only be placed in my own village for gaining that renown.
That could be because you didn’t have enough renown to buy them. I’ve had them saying the same thing to me, where it was in fact that I didn’t have enough renown to buy. :)
Renown is a currency that you use to buy workers with.
Trust is a sort of faction that you need to reach in order to unlock the ability to buy the workers. See it as a ranking system.
1st rank lets you buy a bad worker with renown.
2nd rank lets you buy a little better worker with renown
3rd rank lets you buy the good worker with renown :)
You can place the trophies anywhere in the world, except for the villages. :)
You are welcome :) I hope it made sense, otherwise feel free to ask :D
