The way I did it:
After I had recruited the first dude and done the initial 1 or 2 quests (wolves are surprisingly easy if you pull singles), renown had dried up and I could not hire a 3rd.
I explored a bit to the northeast and scrounged up enough tin/copper to make a smelter and a few copper bars. That got me spiked clubs which are a whole lot better.
With just the clubs and the two of us we could take out one bandit camp of 3.
(with maybe 7 reloads because the combat controls seem bugged)
That got me enough renown to hire a third (look for fighter stats).
At this point you can take out groups of 3 bandits with minor difficulty.
Next step: A loom. Exploring to the east I scavenged enough reeds to research and build a loom. Not only does that open up a whole lot of tech options (strings/rope), it also gets you the adventurer's / travelers gear. While not proper armor, it's a huge upgrade over thin cloth.
At that point you can also craft bags which you really need for longer range exploration and you can take on most enemies in the region if you don't over-extend.
