When I first started, I set up my main camp just south of the town of “Haerndin” on the flat area. What became apparent during the course of the missions is that the location is flat BUT NOT a good choice to begin with. So I used my first start in the game to find out which resources are where and, above all, which ones are needed most often at the beginning.
What was important was short running paths, reeds, rocks, an area that is flat but is not necessary right from the start if you can cut it down for the start, this is of secondary importance.
Since reed is one of the most important raw materials to begin with, it quickly became clear to me that it should be near a lake/body of water, and rocks shouldn't be too far away, but the crucial thing was to get to reeds quickly. That's why I chose the slope on the way to the "Hut of the Exiled Handerker", north of the "Wolf's Camp".
At the beginning I built the first buildings directly on the path and cut them down to the south and west of the lake in order to be able to place later buildings there. Thanks to the missions that explain another important object to you quite early in the game, it is one of the good starting places for me because traveling is not the problem. Resources are more of a problem and reed is an important raw material. Flax, hemp, etc. are not too far away as they can be found in the west.
I'm curious where you settled down to start.

first one should be in the general area inbetwen the first 3 towns near watter just so you have acces to all the basic resources + add small outposts just for specific resourcess that end up further from the enemies (just so they dont get targeted by raids or something
secondary base(s) in my opinion should be next to the bridge(s) over the river that lead into the lvl4 southern areas , this way after you destroy all the bandit camps in the north all raids will need to cross the bridge(s) creating nicely defensive funnels
i propably dont recommend settling in the southern lands since there are hard bandits, it may not sound as problem but when your villagers go gathering around they would be constantly attacked by high level bandits
i personally treat the south as my army expedition lands to get some nice big engangements even without going after the enemy camps, also helps with carrying all the iron back to base
sure you can do the fast travell method but that feels too lame for me :D
if you walk around with he personal shack it also gives you a meter of how good the resources are int he area. The areas recommended by everyone here all have a high rating from the personal shack. and then yea next to water and a road, boom done.
