Axe got one durability point left? Better go all the way to the treeline to start chopping, just to break the axe and return :)
You can also set up regular deliveries, like weekly '7 broken simple axe' to your main village, and '7 simple axe' to your outpost from the main village (the numbers may need tweeking).
Broken tools get automatically repaired at workbenches/toolmakers by crafters, but you may need dedicated delivery people to actually bring the broken stuff to the workstations.
So say you have 1 axe equipped by a villager, 1 broken axe in storage, meaning 0 'axe' in the village, the crafter will make one. At the end of the day the worker deposits the axe in storage, 1 new axe is made, and the broken one also gets fixed, which ends the day with 3 axes in storage registry.
Repairing broken stuff doesn't need player interaction, when a villager (or the player) deposits the broken item in the relevant workstation, a new work order is automatically generated in the list, which the crafter villager will eventually do on his own.
The repaired stuff may sit in the workstation until a delivery guy/gal takes it to storage.
