a quest question

I did the first quest for the below NPC which was to make a stew and get some "special spices". after finding out that the spices would have killed the 'guest' I turned her into the village elder. now she won't speak with me and there is supposedly a bubble for speaking to her but all I get is "get lost, I don't want to speak with you". and I still have the "special spices" as a quest item. is this right?
