Each tavern has a guy standing outside it ready to do business - you pay him to stay the night. But he goes inside like everyone else around 9-10pm.
IIRC, the first tavern in the first town gives you a free night when you talk with the owner. I don't think it ever expires.
However... there don't seem to be many benefits to sleeping beyond having the screen tell you what day it is and how long until winter. Even on the very first day of the game it makes more sense to build most of your camp and return to town than to sleep.
I have to highly suggest going with the "create more travel posts" suggestion, but I didn't have any for the first couple game weeks either. At least not on my first game - but since they only cost 150 renown, I almost immediately set one near my camp and near each village. Then near each herbalist and crafter. Then in the middle of nowhere. Then while I was exploring. Then....
Thank you, yeah I didn't know you could place those everywhere, I thought it was only one per outpost you make, and I only had one outpost at the time. And the reason I want to sleep is so I can actually see things again, and my followers wake up.
