I wish that when you do so, they should fill their inventory with food, so you don't have to manually fill them up.
use the flag order on the place you store food and they eat the best 3 different food in that storage. But they dont fill their inventory with extras.
That funktion is at least useful to top them up before a raid hits your camp/village.
If you need to go on an expedition with your little retinue, than yes. there is no other way right now to fill your and their inventory to the brim with food per hand.
If you know you have to travel far beforehand place down a travel sign and a stockpile halfway or near the site you want to attack and stock some food via fast travel You fill them up with enough low level food (only one type) to make it to the Stockpile location where you have the other 2 food types stored to top them up for the fight.
You need to make one storage only food and the other only equipment and order them to one and then the other. You can restrict what is stored via the menu in each one
edit: another trick is having/building a storage on the way/at your destination even if you do not store food there and carry it with you - put the food from your inventory into the storage, and then take it back out. The decay timer will be reset for all but 1, since only the top item in a food stack decays in storage.
workers feed themselves in camp, but companions do not - they get hungry enough they revert to workers and head back to settlement for food. Not sure about guards.
