The thing is your villagers doesn't hang around and wait for something to complete before do something else.
They complete a task, then something else come up and they do that task. The smoker is kinda a waste. do the other and start crank out berries jam, mushroom stew, meat stew etc.
The smoker works perfectly for me and provides the main nutrition for my residents and my Character. Villager management is a key point of this game. If you just let everyone do everything, it won't work.
You are limited to smoked mushrooms and smoked meat, it doesn't give the best bonus's you would like for your people. Get some sage and water in addition and you can make meat and mushroom stew's which is much better.
I know that, but I don't need it. I only let the good stuff cook when I'm preparing for a defense or attacking bandit camps.
It´s a mechanic within the game, it should just work, then you can decide whether you wish for better buffs.
I have tried a sole cook, he didn´t deliver, tried to up his delivery but he started delivering everything else but food. Then there is the matter of nighttime which lets stuff burn because people are asleep. I prefer to go out and have fun, not watch over whats cooked and what´s not.
As a side note, after moving the smoker it worked somewhat better, stuff sill burns at night.
Everything which is basic should just work as not everyone has access to everything in the beginning.
If you don't use the bonfire or the smoker, things wont burn afaik. stews doesn't burn... jam doesn't either.
I actually think most of my mushrooms ended up being burned at night when peeps are sleeping.
ALSO: villagers tend to use ALL THE WOOD to top up all the fires!
If you "disable" the cooking fires and smokers, delivery villagers do still put cooked foods into storage.
Cooking pots are MUCH more forgiving, and usually give better foods. That's all I let my Tier 1 villagers cook with.
One other problem may be that there's no nearby storage for the foods. I try having # limits on a couple chests or stockpiles for stuff I like - even a private chest - but allow storage in a couple larger not-quite-so-nearby storage places for overflow.
same here you can load the smoker up yourself with lg meats even with the priority set to zero they will retrieve it. I've never set my villagers personal tasks and have never really had a problem. and don't cook at night. burning things on the smoker takes a really long time.
campfire is for reg meat for trade with Hearndean or use it in your fine and meat stew to up the portions. goes from 2 to 3 to 4 depending on what size meat you use. saves on spices.
all my people eat is fish stew, fine stew, berry jam and lg smoked meat. until something better comes along. although a bit of smoked or cooked fish has nice buffs.
Fish stew saves a lot of coin when upping their str. to 4, that's my only minimum req. they have to be able to get 4 str.
another thing about those stews is they are flagged as warm meals. which make your people happier. I'm hoping moral comes more into play as the game progresses.
there is also a slider in your armies settings to take extra when you march i think you can take up to 7 extra things.
I absolutely hate how much wood they waste cooking
