Can't you just craft an axe with stones and wood?
The melee combat is hard to get right, there is a lot of timing and bad hit boxes involved. It can be done, but I just always use the bow.
The arrows have to be in your inventory until you can craft a quiver, then once the quiver is equipped it will add an ammo slot for the arrows to drop into.
Had an axe.
Same with block with the left mouse block up mouse up block side to side mouse side to side. It does take a bit of getting used to.
For attacking the dogs I had to look down at the ground more to hit them. killing them at long range with the bow is much easier, for the wolves! ** you can practice it on a scare crow in the farm field if so inclined when you have the ax or bow, in hand.**
You can also recover your arrows if they hit an object or the ground, but not if they hit an animal or bandit.
If you set your villagers to Soldier and make sure they have an ax in hand they will follow you and attack the bandits when they agro on you when ur close enough. They have to have a weapon in their inventory to do that. you can give them by getting close to them and hitting F button to access their inventory. You CAN NOT access inventory from the Tab key. but you can set them from worker to soldier from the tab key.
I DO NOT suggest you set them to guard at this particular time, it doesn't work very good at this time. I found my villager half way to another town when i did that.
COMBAT If you get raided and you are not near your village you will lose some stuff, if you get raided and your are close enough to the village hit tab key and select soldier and they will come next to you and you can direct them with the indicated key binds in the top right of the screen, It takes a bit of getting used to but i have successfully defended my village about 20 times without dieing myself. Your villager can get injured when they get knocked out, they will spawn back at your village, and have a broken bone, they have a 30 percent chance of dieing from their wounds. depending on the wound, It will tell you the type of wound they have, how long the wound takes to heal in the Tab community list. I found that healing my villager right after their respawn helps a bit. I have had villagers knocked out a few times but have never lost them to death. After the combat is over make sure you set your villages back to workers. so they can rest and sleep if need be.
As for the guard I have to play around with that a bit, to figure out if I am doing something wrong or if its just broken at the moment.
Hope that helps a bit
