The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall

How does stealth work? And a couple other questions
I'm new to DFU, I made a Bosmer archer (totally not trying to stealth archer) and I noticed there's a crouch button, does this actually do anything besides allow me to duck under things? Is there stealth attacks like in newer games?

Edit: Also how can I tell the type of weapon? (long blade, short blade, etc) I picked up a flail but I don't see anywhere that tells me which skill it uses.

Edit edit: Also also how do you gain level ups? The tutorial said killing things doesn't reward exp but when I rested in the first dungeon I gained a level, so what did I do to gain that level?

Edit edit edit: Is there any downside to wearing armor? I don't have any skills for it, I don't think, but does it negatively effect me to wear it? Should I always wear heavy?

Sorry, super newb here. I know I could google most of this, but am currently playing and googling takes more time than just typing this.

You may want to watch some beginner guide videos, but I'll start by saying you should look through the controls/keybinds options. Not only should you reconfigure them to something more comfortable and natural to you, but it will help you be aware of some of the features that even exist.

Most weapons you just sort of deduce it logically. A flail is a 2h blunt weapon. A wakizashi would be a 1h short blade. There's also the UESP you can check out online.

You gain level ups according to your class skills, each time they increase.. After a combination of 15, you gain a level.
- All of your Primary skills contribute to your exp.
- Your 2 highest Majors.
- Your highest Minor.
Your first level only requires 2 point instead of 15.

I don't think there's any real downside to armor other than its weight. Depending on how you built your class, you may be restricted from certain armor or material types, but that's about it.

As for stealth, crouching and stealth are separate functions. You have to press the key to enter stealth mode to use it, then when you enter an NPC's detection radius, you perform stealth checks based on how fast you're moving (walking vs running), your skill, spell effects, etc.

I don't think Daggerfall has Sneak Attacks, but you can Backstab any time you strike the opponent from behind, which grants a huge bonus to your attack and dmg. I haven't tried it, but maybe you could try paralyzing an opponent first? I'm not sure if it stops them from changing what direction they face, tbh. I'm sure others here could tell you for sure.

A Skyrim style stealth archer build would probably see marginal success in this game just because the mechanics are so different.

no downside to armor

if a stealth skill check succeeds the enemy will be turned around and the first attack with any weapon will be a backstab, including bows

there are one or two dungeon structures where you have to crouch-jump through a small passage, zero other use for crouch

weapon types are obvious - mace is blunt, dagger is short blade, swords are long blade, etc.
short sword is short blade that's the only one where there is any doubt

Whenever you approach a creature and enter its detection range, your Stealth skill is automatically checked to determine whether the creature successfully detects you and (if hostile) engages you in active combat. In addition to your Stealth skill value, other factors affect your chance of successfully avoiding the creature's detection, including the creature's Stealth skill, your distance from and location in relation to the creature, and your movement speed. If the creature has initially seen and/or heard you, leaving the creature's sight and hearing range and then moving more slowly - i.e. by crouching or sneaking instead of walking or running - will enable you to continue to attempt to avoid their detection search until they give up after 8 hours have elapsed, while walking or running will result in detection by the creature. On the other hand, if the creature has not yet seen or heard you, you may continue to attempt to avoid detection while moving at any speed.

Stealth's governing attribute is Agility.
Just pulled straight from the uesp, lol
