What to do after leaving the first dungeon?
I just found a town but I am not sure how to continue with the story.

Check the gog version ( not unity) that has a guide under the extras folder. Otherwise, join a guild (or two) you like... save often.. do side quests. The game will inform you of main quest things when they come up. I have also played the game for a long time just traveling about, amassing coins, doing stuff I think my character would do (sorta roleplay). The story is good, but sometimes I just make my own story.

This game is really good about letting you do whatever you want without worrying about the main quest. Certain quests have time limits, such as the first one you will receive, but the one after that has no time limit so you can hang out and level up or explore.

I like using this mod: Main Quest Enhanced [www.nexusmods.com]. It makes things a little more rational and interesting to play in my opinion, but the main quest isn't too bad without the mod

I have no idea, may be best to skip it for now and just grab some cool mods for your next character

Please read the description of Main Quest Enhanced (MQE) before installing it. I'm not sure that a beginner would benefit much from MQE - but it's your decision.
I don't know if it would work for your game in which you left the starter dungeon - just try it (but backup the existing installation and savegames first - you might wish to restore it).
I'm not familiar with DFU modding, but I would imagine that MQE should work, at least as long as you haven't received the invitation to meet with Lady Brisienna (check your inventory for a letter). But I don't know what exactly triggers the letter to appear in your inventory.

Yeah it will probably be better to use that mod in a second playtrough then.

That's the best part. Whatever you want! I usually join the guild that best matches the type of character I'm playing (if Fighter... Fighter's Guild or a Knightly Order, if Mage, Mages Guild, you get the idea), then I do quests for that guild and jump in and out of main story as I see fit.

The first part of the main quest is you getting a letter telling you to meet Lady Brisienna in a random location within a month. If you do that, she'll direct you further. You can ignore her and it has no real repercussions (like being unable to finish the main quest) but you are without (in-game) guidance.

yeah daggerfall seems really cool cause its the most sandbox-y elder scrolls game out there.

Why do you think Daggerfall is more "sandbox-y" than Morrowind or Oblivion?

Daggerfall ends up being slightly more sandbox because it has less pre-made content for you to follow, with pretty much only the main quest having a cohesive story line. I would argue they're all very similar and play the same anyway. It's definitely not more sandboxy in a good way, it's just less full of content

The mods add a ton of content, can turn it into a total sandbox if you like.
lonetrav Jan 26, 2024 @ 2:01pm
I know that numbers alone don't tell the whole story, and that Morrowind and Oblivion have been released long before Daggerfall Unity. But talking about "tons of content": The numbers of mods available from Nexus are:
- Daggerfall Unity: 564 (+ about 10 or so Daggerfall mods, see uesp and DaggerfallSetup)
- Morrowind: 11264
- Oblivion: 31591.
Not every mod adds content, but I don't think the relationship between the numbers is likely to be much different, if we count those adding "content" only (if we can agree on what "content" is).

Undoubtedly, Daggerfall (with or without Unity), Morrowind and Oblivion can be played extensively without ever touching the main quest and without mods. Everything else is probably a matter of personal experience, opinion and preferences.

Wait. The game encourages you to go out and do quests. Often times you must either wait or level up. A good way to spend in-game time is by fast travelling. try heading to the city of Daggerfall by fast travel.
lonetrav Feb 6, 2024 @ 3:33pm
Simply waiting (or sightseeing) is not the main point here. New steps of the main quest are triggered by getting to a certain level (and there are reputation requirements, too). By traveling you can't level up.
