Climbing down

how do you climb down a wall from the top without just falling? climbing up is easy enough, you just push your face against it until you enter "climbing mode" but when you're on top of something, i can't figure out how to enter "repel mode" to get back down. I know it exists because it has happened a couple times by accident but I can't figure out how to enter it on purpose.

Look away from the ledge, hold down walk back. Treat it like a trust fall. Angled walls are a gamble. Always quicksave!
