M2 is for Mouse Button 2. You should assign the keys to what works best for you.
In controls settings in game there is also a Mouse controls section button at the bottom of screen, or it's called Advanced if you use unity.
As well if you haven't done so download and install Daggerfall Unity so you can Click To Hit, have better graphics, get some good mods.
Diagonal Slashes = Increased Damage - Moderately More Difficult to Strike
Horizontal Slashes = Base Damage - Base Accuracy
Vertical Chops = Highly Increased Damage - Extremely More Difficult to Strike
Thrust Forward = Lowered Damage - Increased Accuracy
So basically, go for Thrusts if you're having trouble landing hits.
The Manual looks complicated, but its super easy and you got it setup in 2 Minutes. Just copy 1:1 whats on the Screenshots

Daggerfall it´s a great game and now Steam version is up to the last official patched version, but still it´s an old game and it has some broken stuff still to this day.
Unity fixes all those problems and gives you a pretty good mod manager plus it´s own options to modernize the game, among them that attacking is done by simply clicking, removing the awkard "click and drag".
