Any reason for the lesbian romances?
I'm genuinely confused about this. How is it that, in a game that is actually set in the real world in "early modern" (read: 1600s-1700s), complete with suspicion of different religions and strict Christian monotheism/social roles and all, are lesbian relationships tacitly accepted by the townspeople?

It is very strange to me, considering a major mechanic of the game involves young girls being suspected of witchcraft, which, historically, has *always* been a way to disenfranchise and persecute "different" woman, especially lesbians. It is especially strange when chaste nuns are also up for grabs in this as well.

I don't mean to make a big fuss, and ABSOLUTELY don't mean to by any sort of "phobe", but this is an element that always bothered me and I felt I had to say it because it is just so incongruous with the time period, especially considering the central theme of ostracism in the story!

This game is based on the shoujo animes of the 90s, and in those animes (and the ones of our times as well) yuri was and still is a common trope. And actually the game takes place in the 1800s. If that I would believe the townsfolk think they are just best friends, like sisters. In fact, Elise lies and says Rozzen is her cousin so nobody suspects about witchcraft.
Femine and masculine people always attract each other whether men or women. ♥♥♥♥ relationships have existed before BC and there are also archives related to this topic.
It's just that due to the world they lived they were hiding their sexualities and relationships unlike today

Idk in the endings they seem to know they have a romantic relationship, ie Freya's dad, and of course Lebkuchen would likely have been off the table no matter what

Rozenmarine is a case of everyone in an insular village thinking she is an outsider and a witch, not a lesbian apparently

It's not the same with everyone dear, some hid it some didn't and some just let out some obvious behaviour. The producers probably projected Elise's relationships as such (not hiding it but not making it quite obvious either). There's no need giving too much depth in something that's shallow. It's pretty common in games to project reality or taking reality and turning it into a reality of their own - only to suit the game and it's flow overall

It's the only reason I could think about, but it's just a shoujo anime, I don't overthink about that.
Because it's twee and also because you're supposed to feel really bad in some of the endings.

Well there is magic so it's not in the real world but in the fantasy realm. It's not accurate historical fiction.
Just because it's given a setting does not mean it's aiming for historical accuracy, YOU made that jump. Also, lol, lmao @ nuns not getting up to lesbian shenanigans.

In modern games, everyone is pretty much gay or trans. It doesn't make any sense to me...
IMO it is weird that everyone has to tell you they are gay these days. What every happened to TMI?
