(Spoiler) Can't Open The Door In Father Hans's Study

I got the key from the puzzle at the bottom of the well called the old tunnel key. I pulled up the rug in his study and found the trap door, but I can't use it there. Am I using it in the wrong place? Is there something I need to do first?

old tunnel key is for the door you see at the end of the windmill cave you enter earlier. It is there that you get another key that will be usable for the trap door.
