i just can't understand how not to die!

I ended up just brute forcing it and going through 5 hearts worth of heals. I think the tree that don't shake are safe and you need get move really quick between them

Definitely a tree that doesn't shake is an indicator of safety, but standing even for a second near that tree results in taking damage. I wouldn't be surprised that most of the players after numerous attempts just said : "fnck it" and ran hoping for the best.

I feel like when the trees are/are not shaking also plays a factor in general but I just rushed to the edge of the walkable terrain and edged along it as much as I could.

You should be fine as long as you don't linger. The easy way is to move two trees at a time.

I've found moving while the trees are shaking is safe but the moment they stop you're getting hit.
