extremely hard game

I cant even get past the first dungeon. everything is out to get you
The game keeps spamming messages that "Its safe to rest here!" so i rest to regain my health, but EVERY single time I get ambushed by some random human type enemy that basically one hits me. Theres all sorts of water i need to traverse, but going inside the water apparently hurts me.
Wtf are you suppose to do?

Water dont hurt you, its probably enemies attacking you from above.
Save more frequently before and after rest, go north and find portal or loot around.

The water is fine just try to follow the directions that the ghost lady gave you i died a couple of times but its wasn't too bad.

ok i realized you have to jump up into the crevices in the corners, then u can Camp safely. thats what the game was trynna tell me but it was confusing. after i learned that it was pretty doable.

The games manual does in fact tell you to find higher ground before resting.

I'm pretty sure the game itself tells you this when you look at them: "It's safe to rest in these niches" but it's easy to miss if you're in combat or something. Best be on the look out for whenever the game tells you something, because they use their words very sparingly and only say very important stuff most of the time.
and once you exit the cell it says "go west, then south" which, even if you miss a turn, is still true unless you're at the far western or southern edges (The exit is at in the southwest corner).

Honestly though, some of the later maps can get a bit much, no harm in using a walk through. At least, I have more fun that way. That room with the, what, 6 keys is such a pain without one.

by the way, postitive +10 protection is prob worst protection in this game, as you start naked and stuff, when you get into the negative is when you start getting protection from wearing good gear, like -6

So, the numbers you see beside your character is the bonus damage you get from enemies? Thanks for the tip. It's actually mesmerizing to see how the games used to be played with all these manuals for a hundred pages.

What do I do at this magical gate it asks me to look up a keyword in the manual but there's no manual in the games folder.

And when I press enter it closes game and dosbox.

Go to the manual (at least for me) and look what they are asking for, like "the cost of X spell" is the anti-piracy thing they used back on the day, and write it.

Fun fact though, if you get paralysed when you are in water it's an instant kill.
