Maybe it's one of those things you just have to experience yourself as you play it, the quality of my speakers or even just the fact that I'm not an audiophile who tends to take issues with clarity so much, I'll fully admit any combination of those may invalidate my opinion, but I'm just not reacting to the compression issue as harshly as some.
I mean yeah, the audio in Awakening is bad, but the rest of it is fine.
It's the combat sound effects that are compressed and spikey.
It is actually the stuff of nightmares. There is little to nothing wrong with the actual voice dialogue outside of combat that I can noticeably hear but by god - the combat audio is atrocious, as if they stood at the end of a hallway farting obnoxiously whilst trying to record the sound from an actual PSP on the opposite side.
It's so crunchy and low quality, you'd think it was directly ripped off of Limewire back during the games actual release.
that would just ruin the entire thing the purpose of them putting it on here was to say "hey look at what we made in 2008"
You seem to be missing the point that the audio is in fact, broken. The PSP version of the game sound significantly better.
Maybe it's this because I'm using Japanese audio.
I've noticed it now a bit since I made my original post.
What I find odd is it seems inconsistent. I've only noticed it on a few select SFX tracks and the occasional voice line sounding muffled or peaking. Yet it seems like the majority of the sound sound fine, even most of the voiced dialogue. It's strange. You'd think if some of the audio was badly compressed it would all be.
I would not be surprised if different people handled different sections of the game without so much as talking to each other on how to do it properly. It's very select, in that the OSTs in the novel-esque areas of the game seem relatively unharmed but a lot of the battle OSTs and to some effect, the sound effects of using skills and attacks alongside a lot of the in-engine rendered replacements for cutscenes range from slightly scratchy to disgustingly crunchy.
Surely you'll know which one is which, won't you?

It would be very so hilarious if everyone but me can tell the difference so everyone who wants to try and guess you're welcome.

But if that's not the case, maybe it depends on other stuff, like the audio device or something, dunno.
