Not bad by any stretch of the definition, but the weakest of them (especially of the modern, social activity based games). It felt like it crossed the line into more style than substance. The story was weak. Characters and gameplay were still really fun, and even though I consider it the worst, again, doesn't make it a bad game at all.
That's actually the primary reason why I prefer P3P over P3FES. The story itself wasn't really what keep me engaged, and The Answer took what was already a weak story and just made it convoluted. So between not having access to The Answer and losing cut scenes that were designed to help accentuate a story I didn't care for in the first place - it wasn't a loss to me. On the other hand, gaining access to improved gameplay features via party control and the ability to play a girl with altered Social Links was more appealing since those were aspects of Persona 3 I cared about.
Mainline wise: Revelations unfortunately because of the gameplay, great story though.
4 > 3 > 5
5 is a bit more bloated than 3:Journey or 4, but 3:Journey can get kind of samey - for me, 4 has the best balance of variety and pacing. The pre-3 games can be fun when you make the grindiness work for you (using Estoma to minimise battle frequency, negotiating out of annoying battles) but you still lose a lot of what made 3:Journey/4/5 stand out from conventional JRPGs (pre-3 games have no real social links, no calendar activities, no "one more" attacks, no shuffle time, less satisfying Velvet Room proceedings, and so on.) I prefer 2:IS because it's less fussy about grid position tactical business than 1, and its story was more interesting than 2:EP.
3:Answer is kind of inoffensive but it got so boring so quickly, even compared to the pre-3 games.
2>3>1>5>4
But they're all really good, except 4 which I couldn't get into.
Better watch the movies.
1. Persona 1
2. Persona 3 Portable
3. Persona 3
4. Persona 2
5. Persona 4
6. Persona 5
If the rumors are true I hope the remake of Persona 3 keeps the female MC and party control. That's the only good things about Portable. But not good enough of an excuse for this version over FES unless the remake is true. Then its fine since we can enjoy a superior version with the best of both worlds via the remake.
3/EP>IS/4>1>>>5
Revelations and the PSP port are super solid games, I'd rather replay them over 5.
