Is this game non-linear like Hollow Knight?
You know, like multiple paths of progression at any (or most) given time, areas having multiple entrances and the like.
(Sequence breaks don't count)

The game is mostly linear, but there are a couple of points where you have two choices of where to go for the next zone - like "kill these next two bosses in whatever order you want to unlock the next upgrade to progress". Later on in the game there are some optional objectives/areas that you can do outside of the main route.

There are many different ways to get to different places in the game.

Barely. I'm 75% the way through and it's mostly linear with strict blockers from Metroidvania mechanics, and it seems like you only get those mechanics from story progression (you don't "find" them, you just sort of get them when the story says so). That said, I've felt somewhat confused about where I'm supposed to go a few times because the map system is muuuuuch slower to unlock on average than Hollow Knight despite most zones having a lot less interesting things going on with the map.

it's like a normal metroidvania. you can explore wherever you want but you're blocked in certain areas until you get more abilities like double jump and rock breaking skills

Metroidvania in the sense of the areas being connected and stuff with multiple entrances and exits, yeah, but your progression through the overall areas is largely linear. IE, the candy area (not real, a fake example) has 4 areas with lots of connections between them, but the point at which you can get to the candy area is determined by the story; you can't go there early.

It's faux open ended. But in reality, probably the most linear metroidvania game you'll ever play.
