Although Salt and Sanctuary is also a 2D game the characters various body parts are independently rotated and so scales better with high refresh rates. Whereas this game relies on sprites to animate the character's entire body so it doesn't matter what refresh rate you're playing it.
I got through this game by remembering the timing of attacks and looking for the white glint before an attack starts.
It won't be your controller that is an issue, I played this game with an old, beat up Xbox 360 controller (but I personally think they made controllers more robust back then). In terms of the ropes, you have to TELL Yi to grab it, he doesn't automatically grab ropes so if you miss the "up" input on the controller he just...falls and dies. Probably one of the things that irritates me the most.
I can't say that I ever had an issue with Yi's sword not hitting, but my recommendation would be to equip the jade that reduces knockback on parry. It may be the case that you are taking into account your positioning before the enemy attacks, and after parrying you are knocked out of attack range that may help.
