Is there any way to disable the dark-souls style 'drop all your everything on death' mechanics?
It was never a good idea. It wasn't a good idea in Dark Souls, it hasn't been a good idea in any game /since/ Dark Souls.

It was always a good idea, its an even better idea in Dark Souls and good for a metroidvania Hollow Knight-like.

Okay, I admit, I got overly salty about it, but I still don't think it's all that great a mechanic. I've never seen a game where it's better than 'not actively obnoxious'. Like... what does it contribute? Extra tension, I guess, but also a lot of frustration.

It also doesn't really raise the challenge or anything, it just raises the stakes without any player input, and either forces the player to grind to get back when they lost if they fail the retrieval, or just sets the player back for no real reason.

it forces you to think more carefully about your decisions

...Not really? Usually by the time you know that going into a place/fighting a certain enemy is a bad idea, you've already died. And that's leaving aside when you're losing resources while trying to figure out the pattern of a boss blocking the only way forwards.

To me, it mostly feels like it punishes you for trying to explore the world or try new things.

if your having that much of an issue with dying and re-killing the enemy, just equip the soul reaper jade, so you only have to hit em with a talisman attack to retrieve your drops, hit em, get your stuff, and dip out

mini bosses and elites dont grab your dropped stuff, so i dont see the problem with it

They... do? My stuff has been grabbed by mini-bosses and elites. Unless it just got deleted when dying to a miniboss, but it definitely didn't seem to drop anywhere.

They aren't btw. Minibosses drop your stuff on the floor

the mechs where u drop everything upon death is ignorant and as said before ONLY the dark souls games was able to use it and even then it was just a pain in the a...ive beat them all without much frustration honestly and still would rather not have that mech....and in this style of game...lol def not a good idea

I dislike it too. It's the same as deleting the gold you opened from the chest permanently (and that chest will not respawn of course)... And that is mostly avoidable by spending them all out before entering the boss room, so what is the point of this kind of system? Btw, good luck finding the "drop", without a map which is making sense...

I guess some people really like the mechanic, but for me, it just makes me *not* want to do the things that are actually fun in these games. You're given an incentive to grind up to the next level instead of facing that boss now, which makes things more boring. You're given an incentive to *not* explore that interesting but challenging path, and instead run back to heal, which makes things more boring. And lost progress is one of the greatest things that makes people drop a game and never play it again.

I don't like the game mechanic but it is rather easy to reduce the damage just to spend most of your money whenever you can buy any item.

i like it makes me plan more and makes the game feel more dangerous. if you lost everything if you died once i would not have liked it. but you can get it back unless you fail to retrieve it.

You are correct, "reward" you to play like a rat, also punish the player who wants to explore and try new things.

Dark Souls didn't invent the corpse run.
