How do you consume tao fruit?

I have three of them in my inventory and they say they can increase slash and talisman damage when consumed.
How the hell do you consume them or are they active once they're in your inventory? This is perplexing me. lol

It is automatically consumed upon pickup.

If it's in your inventory it's already consumed and in effect.

Agreed... What a weird mechanic. Why not at least have a tooltip pop up when you select it in your inventory to tell you this? It definitely seems like something waiting to be used. And, judging by my Google search, we are FAR from alone in this thinking.
