Parrying for non-parry people
There are some games -- most of them, really -- where I am simply unable to parry. I am otherwise a decent gamer, but I don't have that level of precision to my timing when it comes to anticipating enemy attacks. In most games that have parry mechanics, I just straight up ignore them because they aren't worth bothering with.

I have never played a FromSoft game, so obviously I've never tried Sekiro.

That said, how critical is it to parry in this game, and how reasonable is it for someone who is bad at parrying to be able to use it?

You can play with the game without parrying at least from my playthrough so far....

There is story mode, if you will have problem with parry, which is core mechanic of fights.

Timing isnt hard. Just a bit of training.

TY. Feels like wimping out to play on story mode, but at least it's a fallback option.

It is VERY necessary. Later in the game, it pretty much becomes a requirement to parry well. The parry system feels REALLY good. Do a perfect parry and receive no damage, parry poorly and you lose health, which you can gain back if you don't get hit within those 10 or so seconds.

For later bosses, proper parry is required for sure (also later in the game, you will have different types of parries, kinda). Unless you play in story mode and ramp up the attack multiplier for your character.

I do have to say, the game does a very good job on gradually teaching (forcing) you to use parry properly in different situations. The process could be harsh but rewarding in the end.

Like the other guys said, it's something you will want to learn. A major skill mechanic is powered easily buy parrying. That being said, while timing for parrying varies from enemy to enemy it is relatively easy here to do. Timing is fairly generous.

Is there anything to alleviate the weird mechanic where you have to jump parry or dive to counter green flashing red attacks? I keep finding myself in a bad position when a mob decides to do a green attack and not being able to jump parry fast enough.

Attacks are well telegraphed and enemy AI is pretty rhythmic. Also, if you parry early you still succeed with a bit of chip damage and still get a charge. It's nowhere near the Sekiro-like people say it is. If you can time a dodge in these games, you can time the parry. The only dumb thing imo was having a perilous attack system that requires you to jump and execute a downward attack after an enemy has just lunged towards you.

I think the downward attack you are referring here is a very old system in demo? You can now use parry action in the air to perform the same effect as the previous downward attack action. Is a lot easier to execute and control is very fluent now.

Dude, I've been gaming for four decades. If I tell you I've never been able to parry attacks in the past, while being generally able to do everything else, I think it's pretty safe to say that's not something that's going to change.

May I advise you to play osu!? It can help you to develop your sense of rhythm and reaction in a fun way. Parry games are based on an attack combos at equal intervals. Don't ensist just trying help you to enjoy parrying in videogames.

You absolutely won't be able to finish the game unless you learn to parry, yeah.

Long story short, in term of gameplay this game is just a very long QTE: when a white glint appears, press the parry button.

The first big boss is a test about if you can achieve a success rate of ~95% with your perfect parry. And the remaining of the game is simply unplayable if you don't have such a success rate with your parries - having the perfect timing for parry is just the first stone of the combat system. If you don't put that first stone, any random enemies will shred you into piece and there's no point into learning anything else in combat.

It is also worth mentioning that learning and succesfully executing the parry contributes highly to the satisfaction you feel while playing the game. It makes the game simply more fun
