German Steam-page calls the game "Schnupferich" - Error?
Hi,

so as I'm writing this, the Steam-page titles the game "Schnupferich: Die Melodie des Mumintals". The hero has always been called "Snufkin" in the German cartoon, too, so I'd hope they didn't change the name of Snufkin to "Schnupferich" in the German version.

Can anyone in the know comment on this? Thx!

Doing a bit of googling it seems that the current day German name is Schnupferich. Not much the devs can do about that, friendo.

Oh man :/

That's a serious blow. Snufkin is one of my favorite characters in fiction ever and I cannot imagine him with another name.

If any of the developers happen to read this: Please do the miracle and put in an option for German players to choose between Schnupferich and Snufkin. It'd get you at least one additional day 1 sale :>
Maybe just play it in English?
The problem for the devs is that they probably have a massive list of all the official names and terms of the Moomin setting and they can't deviate from it.

For instance, in Norway one of the characters used to be named Homsen. This has since become a mild slurr for gay people so they had to change it during the 90s. The devs can't just give people the option to change the name or it's a breach of contract.

I mean, I think it'd be nice to offer people who grew up with Moomins to experience the game with the names they're familiar with.

I know I'm the bad guy now for making such demand, but playing the game in English wouldn't feel right either, considering it's a franchise I grew up with as a child, watching the German cartoon. I'd probably wait for a GamePass-release and play it in English then or something. But if there is a chance at all to have the original German names, then it'd be great. I'm not going on a hate-campaign against the game and its developers, sorry if I came off like that.

Pretty sure he was called Schnupferich in the books long before the cartoon got translated. I agree that Snufkin sounds better, but I guess Schnupferich would be the original and people who grew up with the books would prefer it like that.

i grew up with the cartoon, not the books (most people were, i guess) and i would strongly prefer the cartoon translation. it's just one string to change (if the rest of the characters are similar to the cartoon).
Here's the fabulous intro sequence in german:

In Estonian he is called "Nuuskmõmmik", which is basically "sneezy bear" :)

Do you really mean "hardly"? Your posting sounded like you would prefer "Snufkin" ^^

More accurately "sniffing bear". Mõmmi or mõmmik is how kids call bear because of the sound bear makes. Actual name for bear is "karu".
I never understood why they chose this name since original character has nothing to do with bears, probably just because it sounded close enough.

Just to put in a bit of perspective into this discussion :
The Moomin/Muumin world created by the Finnish author/illustrator Tove Jansson, has been enjoyed through her books for 3 generations and counting. And the Moomin world been translated into various languages over the years, both in books and through various animation series over the decades since.
So although some younger people today maybe think of their experiences through the latest animation series as 'the real thing', there is in reality a lot of variation in what people have based their love of the Moomins on.

That said - this discussion here is with all likelihood completely fruitless. The Moomin world, characters, images, names, etc. are under copyright rules from the Jansson family (or whoever owns the rights today). So dev's will have had to work within limitations set by the copyright owners.

(If interested, see for example this overview of various animations over the years: https://www.moomin.com/en/blog/moomin-tv-animations/ )

2 sekunden google..

In the German version of the moomin tv show he was named Snufkin.
Schnupferich is just a poor translation.
Never heard it before.
