Kurohyou (aka "Yakuza: Black Panther")
Kurohyou Ryu Ga Gotoku 1 and 2 are spin-offs for PSP, released between Yakuza 4 and 5. It never came to the West and is all in Japanese, so its unofficial Western title is Yakuza: Black Panther. The protagonist is Tatsuya Ukyo, a delinquent who accidentally kills a Tojo clan member, then gets caught and is forced to fight in illegal arenas. I'm emulating it on RetroArch (it's on Steam for those who don't know), the gameplay is simple but fun and the story is cool (my Japanese sucks but I'm following it).

It's more likely to see PS3 and PS4 spin-offs (Yakuza Dead Souls, Ryu Ga Gotoku Kenzan and Hokuto Ga Gotoku) being remastered and ported to Steam one day than portable games. But if at least they ported Kurohyou 1 and 2 to mobile, that would be amazing. It's worth playing.

This is the live action, for anyone interested:

love the idea of expanding on this world from the pov of non-kiryu adjacent characters so i'm hoping to see this get remade. didn't hana cameo in this as well?

the team that did the Black Panther 2 english patch is supposedly still working on the BP1 patch. I think they said they were shooting for a 2022 release earlier this year but who knows where they're at with it. I would much prefer these games on steam though. Given how companies are extremely hesitant to put out older games due to the poor graphics, it's probably unlikely to get a direct port. There's also the fixed camera angles on the streets with dozens of screens you have to walk through to get across town. It's one thing for it to be on the PSP but it would probably not work for a lot of people on modern consoles/PC. Hard core fans would eat it up but they obviously want to have a certain standard for their releases. Ishin could have easily been straight ported without a remake. It was near the quality of Yakuza 5. A remaster would have been more than enough imo but they spent a lot of time and money to have a better presentation to lure in new fans.

it's a shame but Sega is extremely wary of porting older games unless there's market demand. How much demand is there for BP really? People who buy every RGG game but that's probably not enough to justify the cost.

Akiyama's secretary? Well, so far I've only met Yuya from the original series. I made a pause to finish other games, but I'll get back to it and see who else has cameo. And I agree, a remake would be great, this is a cool story that unfortunately few people know. I always wanted the anime Kengan Ashura (about illegal fights for the rich) to become a game. Then I discovered this game while searching for classics... It's exactly what I was looking for.
