I have around 500 hours in LaD:I and just came back for another run through it while I'm waiting for the next Yakuza to release in a few weeks.
So, imo it's fantastic.
I'd rank this remake as second only to Yakuza 7 as the best game in the series.
You have a medium sized open world city map that you're free to walk around in.
It's maybe 4 or 5 times the size of a Skyrim city, except it's actually fully populated and filled with activities and side quests.
It's basically like an episode of Rurouni Kenshin or Gintama, where they hang out in the same town but different stuff happens from day to day.
You can't just roam the countryside but there are a few areas outside of town you can go to like your farm house as well as a bunch of dungeons for side quests and parts of the main story.
The game is designed to be played either as an rpg, a lifesim or both.
And above all, you can not skip tedious conversation during ingame cutscenes, you have to keep pressing A button to progress into the conversation of the cutscene, absolutely ass. Surprisingly enough they allow you to skip the high quality pre rendered cutscenes which you actually want to see cuz its always top tier to watch, but the ingame cutscenes are ass quality nd you cant skip, these things are absolutely game breaking nd enought reason to stop playing.
This made me quit on chapter 7 out of boredom.
IF you enjoy fighting the same group of npc's every 5 minutes when you walk around a corner, this is for you.
if you enjoy a million MANDATORY filler-quest diluting/breaking up the main storyline, this is for you. what good is the main story, if after a deep and emotional scene, i have to go help some old lady catch her cat? or put down my sword, and start dancing/singing? Those are examples of the awful pacing, and side quest that are thrown in here.
i think i purchased this bs at full priced and i tried to cope with buyers remorse for the first 4 hours or so, but i REALLY wish i got a refund. Even with the samurai ascetics, and old japan scenery attached to it, this is a Terrible, terrible game. But apparently, guys that play the yukuza series are good with it. I really dont know how lol
edit: that first dude must be smoking something strong. There is NO WAY in ANY universe that this is a RPG. There are Literally ZERO rpg elements, and the game page doesnt list it as one.
(BTW, dont go in thinking its some deep emotional thriller, yes there's choices in the game, but you dont get to choose any, if that makes sense, it doesnt i know)
But picture this, after the NPC finish spewing their hearts out to you with a sob story or whatever, a box comes up for you to say something! exciting right?!!! buuuuut theres only ONE choice to choose in the box. Soooooooo, yeah whats the point of a choice-box in the first place?
The main story is serious, the side content isn't.
Been that way since 2005.
I would strongly suggest the Brawler 2x mod. I would imagine RGG don't want you to fall into the old Yakuza melee spam habits but it makes no sense as to why Brawler is so weak and repetitive here. Just get Brawler 2x.
Seal in pot and vendor is nice if you can't get over the absurd grinding changes they made but they can be absurdly OP. Then again, this post was asked over 4 months ago with no further context so OP's probably made his mind up by now...
And no, you actually cant say No to sidequest. If doing the main storyline, walking to the destination, if someone comes up to you with their worthless problems, there is NO option to just simply keep walking or going to your destination, You HAVE to stop and read their issues with a cutscene thats forced onto you.
The option your talking about, "no option" actually does the same thing as the yes one does. You do the quest now, or you do it later. Either way you do it.
With the exception of ones that unlock new game mechanics, every side story can be turned down and ignored.
Just because it's still there on the map doesn't mean you HAVE to do it.
User error.
It's completely fine if you don't like it and you're right that there are side quests which force the introduction on you but that's how storytelling works. This isn't an MMO where the NPCs have a glowing symbol over their head.
But saying that the yes or no is trivial because you've to do it later is complete ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. You CAN do it later if you feel like it. That's literally an option which a purpose but get filtered by side quests I guess.
Maybe you just don't like LAD/Yakuza. Move on and stop saying its garbage when it is clearly not.
Maybe a little jank thanks to Unreal Engine and not the Dragon Engine, but its still a fantastic game.
@OP
I see you have Odyssey as a favorite game. This game is nothing like that, nor is it as open. The poster above saying its a Skyrim City but 3-4x as big is quite right. But everywhere you go, you will find something, or see something.
Give it a try for 2 hours, see if you like it. You might really like it, or you might not. But do know that this is running a different engine than the rest of the Like A Dragon/Yakuza games, so it is a little bit jank, but you barely notice it thanks to how freakin awesome the Story and content is.
Story: Serious
Side-Content: Hilarious
Have fun.
