How do you escape the Shinsengumi?

I've tried hiding and waited for long enough to go into the kitchen and make lunch, but when I came back and jumped out of the basket, they were still hunting me. I can't do anything else while they're chasing me and it's really boring.

they don't just go away. The hiding spots are meant to be temporary measures for them to walk past so you can slip past them and run to the objective

I didnt hide a single time during my playthrough, just ran straight to the checkpoint

When I went back in, I had to backtrack a bit and didn't trigger the Shinsengumi for a while. But when I did, this time I just had to turn down a couple of alleys before I found the checkpoint. I thought I had to lose them before I could do anything else.
