In the meantime you might try watching the anime Summer Wars as it'll show you enough to, perhaps, start winning a few rounds without purely relying on chance.
1: Always go for anything with a moon in it, anything that looks like a big theater curtain, or the red sake cup. Followed by animals and birds. At first.
2: If that isn't working out, try to get five "poetry ribbons", prioritizing blue.
3: "Koi" is for when you're certain you can match more stuff before the opponent matches anything. Everyone has this kind of crap luck in the game from time to time.
4: If it looks like the opponent is going to pile up something before you, do everything you can to get 10 "junk" cards so you can steal a win.
But probably more important that the above is my "external ruleset":
1: The very first thing you should do when starting a new game is change the rules so that you're betting for the most points you can. In the entire history of Yakuza, no game has ever, ever remembered these settings, so you'll have to do it every single time.
2: Exiting the game at any time before the end when it tallies points will spare you the indignity of losing points. There are zero consequences to this.
3: Always exit the game the instant you see these words: "The opponent goes first."
4: Play a short set of 3 games, obviously. If you don't win the first game, exit.
Its all about learning the hands. At first, pick an easy hand like Boar-Deer-Butterfly, Moon Viewing or Poetry Ribbons and try to get them. The guide is useless in this game too, as it only tells you what your opponent is doing, not you. The guide was really helpful learning the game, so this one might not be the one you should learn on.
There are some shortcomings to this, like it won't tell you anything other than the card that makes the hand, not what the hand is, its worth, or if you're more than 1 match away. It also doesn't work for the hand "Seasons" in this version, seems to be delayed by a round and it sparkles for the previous round's month set.
Still though, ever since this option was introduced I learned Koi Koi much easier. Can't read for ♥♥♥♥ but I remember which pictures give the most points and which piles they'll go into when I need to build junk or variety.
This isn't helpful towards completion but it makes it my go-to in the beginning for money. You don't have to lose money in Koi Koi. Games where you don't have a set bet but its contingent on the results of the game can be exited before chips change hands. I.e. if you're playing a 3-round Koi Koi game you can play up to the 3rd round before the results screen, hit select, and quit before chips change hands. This also applies to Cee-lo and Oichu-Kabu when you are the dealer (bets leave your pocket right away). Exit the minigame before the results when money changes hands.
For suits you can claim "hiki" if you have 1 of the suits, 2 of the suits, 3 of the suits or all 4 of the suits in you hand - and the rest are showing in the playing area. You can then take them all.
