Mahjong tips needed.
I want to complete the completion list.

But... I don't understand the Mahjong game at all. Is there any way I can brute force it without thinking? Or is it all luck based?

This isn't a game I'm gonna be able to learn(I've just tried for 3 hours), it's too academic for my 80 IQ brain.

I made a pretty lengthy post (in a few yakuza boards), I think this one is probably the best though. You have 2 options to learn. Either go through an extensive guide or do a quick guide and then try to brute force your way to winning. I think in the long run it's better to go with option 1 and just learn all the nuances of the game. Fundamentally, the game is very simple, it's all the little details that are hard.

It's a heady combination of gambling (luck) and knowledge. It's pretty rare to find anyone who doesn't fall in love with the game whenever they take a moment to learn its rules. That's my recommendation: Learn the basics, save-scum some wins. You'll probably grow to like it, and then you'll be set for any of the Yakuza games. Most of them offer a huge amount of Mahjong incentives (Y7 being a very unfortunate exception), even if they usually don't mandate very much for achievements and the like.

Thank you, I'll watch that as soon as I'm done reading this written guide.

A lot of things have made me feel dumb in life, but nothing makes me feel dumber than to not understand this game...

Well, I'm properly studying now, which I haven't done in over 10 years perhaps. I hate games that involve luck, so, if I don't fall in love with this game after winning a few times, I'm coming back to say: "I told you so". ^^

Id recommend https://mahjong.guide/a-beginners-guide-to-riichi-mahjong/ and maybe sign up for mahjong soul to do the tutorial. Understand that while mahjong has a lot of luck factor, the better player usually wins or comes out of the game barely losing a lot of points tanking their rating. One thing a new player needs to understand is that winning every hand your dealt is not possible, so when your hand sucks and there's 20 discards remaining, you need to play defense so you don't lose the points you do have. There's also gonna be games where you get completely destroyed and bankrupt in two turns, or a game where you get god hands every turn. That's just how the game works.

As a new player you should focus on just playing and soaking in the flow of the game, and only focus on a few yaku (dragons, seat wind/round wind, riichi, tanyao, toitoi, and maybe pinfu). There's a lot of them to learn, but some of them you will probably never see for hundreds and thousands of games.

Most mahjong requirements in yakuza games are pretty generous. It's usually very basic, and not something crazy like get a yakuman. However, jugment requires some knowledge simply because the game asks for a three colour straight, which isn't that hard, but if you don't understand anything about mahjong, it might seem impossible.

If you ever have a specific question, I'll be glad to answer it.

No thank you, I've got enough reading material for now, and I'm dumb, so it might not ever register.
