Is there a reason why this game is on Unreal Engine instead of Dragon Engine?
It feels very strange for RGG Studio game to not use their own engine.

Source of them saying this is the reason?
I saw this. They did give that really weird reason in this video. This reason specifically is mentioned around 56:30.

Probably branching out + less time of development

I imagine that they did not have the tools to make sword combat? Obvious reasons: it's not up to them for the engine to work. which it's a huge deal.

There's plenty of sword combat in Lad and Judgment so no

Uhh... What? It's their own engine, it's absolutely up to them for it to work.

is it UE5? if that's the case maybe they try to get more attention that way.

UE4 is not their engine, so if there is a problem, just call Epic and they have to fix it.

I've not played judgment, but all the Yakuza action rpg and the weapon combat is not the best. it's just my feeling.

You are expecting too much from the sword combat here, is the same as if you were punching

maybe the unreal engine is just better than their current engine

Some older fans did not enjoy the combat of the dragon engine as much as other games, and personally, newer releases like 6 and K2 had some issues frame issues, graphical glitches, and physics glitches

Its probably easier to port.

I still can't find where it's apparently not made in Dragon engine and instead made in an outdated version of Unreal???

"Like a Dragon: Ishin is the first title from RGG studio to be built on Unreal Engine 4, bringing astounding graphical quality to the Like a Dragon franchise. Developing on Unreal Engine 4 has unlocked new textures and other graphical details that make Ishin’s gripping story one of the most cinematic tales in RGG history."
can't find an official statement about it from SEGA although I think it's safe to trust Sony

If I had to guess it's probably just easier to recreate the feeling of the original 0/Ishin engine (combat wise) while still having graphical/technical upgrades, I'm not too educated on the Dragon Engine but I assume they'd have to rework a lot considering the combat seems heavily physics based.

A similar example of a company doing it for this reason is Rockstar/GSG's (not great) GTA Definitive Edition Collection. They essentially copy+pasted everything from the original games into UE4 allowing for them to make graphical changes while keeping pretty much everything else 1:1 with the originals (if we ignore the bugfest).

Pretty weird... I like RGG for developing their own engines, so it's kinda disappointing. But I guess their monkey ball remake was made in Unity.

It's fascinating though. It'd be interesting to see why they decided to use UE4. If they just wanted to try it out, or they made a deal with Epic. Also it's nice this isn't an EGS exclusive.

Also I forgot UE5 only came out as recently as the new Matrix film, so of course they'd be using UE4. Silly me.
