How the &*^*&^* do you return library books?

No matter where I stand the librarian just says 'you should bring that to me'. I'm soft-locked out of most of the game here.

Annnd I just found it. You have to right-click the librarian, then double click the book, an interface that exists nowhere else in the game.

well, except that it's the same system anywhere else you might need to 'use' some books.
