Films/anime/manga with similar "feel"?
Can anyone thing of some recommendations? The demo hit me hard, so I'd love it if someone could recommend me some J-horror that hits similar notes. Desolate, maybe on surreal side, either historical setting or the use of historic locales (abandoned old villages, mansions, temples etc) and religious/mythological themes.

Ju-on, Ringu, Infection [2004], and Pulse [2001] are solid movies. 28 days later has a dream like direction to the whole movie that is worth a watch. These all involve spirits which goes in line with Silent Hill 4. One of the main games that inspire Labyrinth of the Demon King. Additionally, you could give Fatal Frame 1-3, The quadrology of Silent Hill, and Condemned criminal Origins. I do own you a manga series.

These are all good recommendations and most had some inspiration for LOTDK. Another would be Throne of Blood

low key but dororo
Wish I did know more. There was an anime/manga called Mushi-shi that seemed like it might be in line, but I never fully watched. Another game, but if you have the means to, you might check out the PS2 game, Kuon.
Check Incantation movie. Though it's from RoC, not japanese

Check the work of Junji Ito. You're bound to find some stories that'll scratch those itches.
Noroi!

It's actually a game, but: Cosmology of Kyoto.

Old-ass PC game but I bet the devs know exactly the game I'm talking about, and if they don't, they probably should.

This is a good one. That was a big inspiration for the original art style I was going for, before I tried to make something more Silent Hill like.

Bro play Onimusha it has a very similar scenario and gameplay. It has the same punishing melee combat, horror stuff, and it's in Feudal Japan with demons. This game also heavily reminded me of Silent Hill 4 with it's melee focus, style of cutscenes (the way enemies are introduced is very similar), and focus on spirits (that chaser enemy is like the ghosts in SH4).
Apart from works already mentioned by others in the thread, Shinya Tsukamoto's Gemini, Teruo Ishii's Horrors of Malformed Men, Masaki Kobayashi's Kwaidan, Fromsoftware's Kuon, Kaneto Shindou's Onibaba and much of Edogawa Ranpo's work

Throne of Blood is one of my favourite samurai films. Even better knowing its actually an adapted shakespear story
Throw in Onibaba and Kurenko!

This is a great thread, rewatched Throne of Blood at the weekend after reading, hadn't seen it in years. Another suggestion I would make is Kwaidan, a classic Japanese horror anthology.
