Shallow analysis and theory of the story of Bokura (spoilers ofcs)
Hello, I recently finished playing the game with my gf and we went on a discussion on what the story means and the meaning of why the world is set in two perspectives.

The story introduces the character that you chose as an adult. He goes on a tangent of how his life is miserable and how the only time he felt truly free was one winter back in elementary school. The memory that the characters recall is what we think is a form of dissociation due to witnessing trauma (one of the parents getting killed by a hunter in the woods). Since the game doesn't take place in what actually happened and is only a recollection of how that incident went, it can explain the different perspectives.

When experiencing a mentally traumatizing event the brain will find a way to protect itself in order to comprehend things easier. In this case altering their memories with childlike themes such as robots and talking animals (we think the animals are references to pakemon, more in a bit). Which is why after seeing the death of the deer at the beginning starts the change of thematic for both characters since it was the beginning of the progression of trauma.

Our basis for why the characters viewed the memory in different themes isn't super well thought out so bear with us a bit here since this is a stretch. Near the ending of the game we see the two characters getting ready to blow up the statue. Before Red ignites the firecracker Blue decides to destroy his pakemon game along with the statue. We view this as a way of moving on hence why he views everything to be from the future such as a robots and spaceships which can all be seen as futuristic. Red on the other hand has not given up his pakemon game and is actually quite good at it as seen from the opening scene.

I'am aware this theory is quite shakey but I haven't seen much threads where this was discussed which is why I wanted to share it!

Hey, cool theory. It's lovely what we all take from a game

SPOILER
I do not actually believe that the hunter in the woods killed any humans. Maybe I misremember. But it appears that he only kills animals and that the two parents of Haru are probably just Deer. Haru is also a strange animal or monster of some sort.

i just finished the game with my friend, and in the ending when you're riding in the train and reminiscing, it's revealed the old man was dissecting a human body, so i do think he did move on to kill a human.

No it says that he is holding on to human bodies (probably his dead wife and daughter) but all the others are animals.

If you revive him, then it is revealed that he was dissecting the body of whoever he killed.
