It might indeed be too slow if you play it like pomodoro timer instead of an idle game. You see, idle games supposed to be run 24/7, and you occasionally check them. And maybe after a year of such thing you'll be in mid- or end-game. But since here the progress only happens when timer is run, it leaves two options: don't bother with all the pomodoro thing and just run the timer 24/7 or don't bother with Idle game part progression, because if you only run it while working, it'll be sad picture.
Maybe it'll be better to allow it to progress even if the timer is not running? I don't know. I'm okay as it is - running one instance 24/7 on my server (eats up a lot of CPU, by the way) and another one on my home PC as an actual pomodoro timer. Have some things to consider, but I would say don't fix what's not broken :)
But when you need to advance in adventure, switch to shop items. I usually set order by price there so you can take everything by clicking in one place. Speeds up unlocking new things a lot, like from 200 to 700 combat eff.
So my idea now is to alterate between shop and upgrade modes.
The tricky part about shop mode is that combat items wears up quite fast, since you can't afford many levels. And if you use automation software, keep in mind that it shouldn't try to click upgrade button when rewards window is shown - if you click outside of it, it'll close without auto-collect.
