or is this an online only game

On steam there is that option.

If your playing via steam you can change your mode until local multiplayer mode.

You can select Local Versus mode in Mode Selection.

Same im trying to do local versus without internet connection but it requires internet also the local versus might means you gtta have 2 computers to play that mode
