Is Hard Mode required to get what the collection considers 100%?
If it does, I think I'm going to be in so much pain....

If by hard mode you mean not using Buster MAX, no. There's no trophies/achievements barred behind having it off, so you should be able to 100% the collection without worrying about difficulty.

However, from what I've heard some of the collectible chips do require you to do things in battle aside from just quickly sniping enemies, so if you're looking to complete your collection then you might want to play the games as originally intended, or you could see if anyone's willing to trade for them. That's simply just your own personal collection though, and not anything tied to any achievements or anything and probably only really matters if you plan on doing PvP.

I mean the hard mode that comes with BN2. Apparently that is actually a feature.

I've been doing my playthrough of BN2 recently, I haven't encountered a hard mode yet. I'm also not currently aware of any achievements that require it. If it exists, it doesn't seem to be required for anything that the collection itself deems to be progress.

There aren't any stars that show up in hard mode. I would be surprised if completing hard mode was necessary for "completed" to show up.

But it does give you a Sanctuary chip for normal if you complete it though, doesn't it?

Dear dingus... Hard Mode exists in BN2. It requires a 100% game clear (with all 5 stars and final boss clear) and entering a specific code (can be found in gamefaqs) at the continue option. Thank you.

Can't expect every newcomer to have textbook knowledge on the games. No need for name calling.

I started with mmbn1 and got all its achievements then played mmbn2 and even without doing 100% on 2 all my remaining achievements are for 3 so hard mode is not necessary.

Good point. It does indeed. I guess someone will just have to get all the stars and report.

Currently working on that, though it's kinda pain with the lack of people willing to trade to help with the Library and people willing to netbattle just to get the exclusive chips.

There's a thing called research, oh well. I guess looking up 15 year old games is too much to ask for.

Asking on this board can help that a lot, I've heard.

There's a thing called spoilers that someone playing a game for the first time can be expected to be avoiding. Ever heard of a blind playthrough?

Asking the same question, just got my third star and I am on my way trying to achieve the 4th and 5th, I hope finishing the hard mode counts as a complete save file.

After suffering trying to get all the PVP chips and getting BassV3, I can confirm that Hard Mode isn't required to get the "completed" milestone.
