Game looks great! but...
Incredible i must say, looks like insane depth and a ton of potential, WHY though

why can we not make the characters more attractive, maybe 6/10 of them are hard on the eyes, like the first one hasel in the trailer, I almost spit out my coffee

LOL alright come on guys, the woke trend is dying down. you dont need to bend the knee anymore to this small group of crazy (mostly just loud) people... hopefully we can get some character portrait mods asap

anyways hope for the most success for the game! great work devs!

I love the art of the world/buildings, etc, but the character portraits are really hard to look at in my opinion. That doesn't mean it ruins the game for me or anything, but it certainly hasn't added anything to it.

At any rate, I don't mean any disrespect to the Devs, as I can see how much work and love they put into this. But the character art does seem to be pretty hit or miss with people since it's a rather bold and unusual style. So discussions like this are inevitable.

They definitely look different than characters in other cozy games. Personally, I think it fits the story. After all they live in a small, cyberpunk-ish and kind of run-down town. It would be strange if they all looked like super models tbh. I don't think that has anything to do with being "woke", it's just a design choice for world building. Let's not make everything political, especially not cozy games!

I think the characters look cool. But I guess we can agree they are not "conventionally attractive" - but the style of this game is cyberpunk, so it makes sense they look like this. If you find the art style off putting then you don't have to play, since the art direction is a big part of this game.

I saw someone complaining in the Fields of Mistria discussion about the "revealing" clothing of the female characters and asking for them to be more covered up. So you can never make everyone happy.

Its the first farming sim where I will have to choose my spouse for being the least hideous in town. This town seems to be the place where all the 1/10s went to live.

Sounds like horrible advice to the devs. might work on the concord forums though... do they exist anymore?

I mean... people who constantly talk about "woke" are a small minority of society. Catering to them isn't going to increase sales. It'd limit it. Surprise... there's billions of other people besides a small minority of crazy people in the US.

In reality the minority are those who go around asking for woke content in the games, people are tired of that ideological garbage, that's why in LATAM we make fun of the woke crap. Not for nothing Wukong received such a good review after knowing that it had been questioned for not being “woke”.:steamhappy:

They see woke stuff everywhere.

you guys wouldnt last sh.it in Spirittea lmao

Well, In a game with romanceable NPCs it would be nice to have attractive options. As it stands, from a heterosexual male point of view, maaaaybe the rude town clerk girl (forget her name) is the best looking option

That’s not.. ideal. Im all for options and I love the style but that shouldn’t be a limiting factor here

So what if the models don't look like there from First Descendant. If you want a goon game go play that instead of this. I like the characters the way they are. Their interesting and weird. Personalities are crazy. My criteria would be that some of their over-world sprite models dont match their portraits. Like hazel still looks human. If you changed her skin to more of a metallic color and add a frog in her hair i think it would look amazing. Bea could definitely use more of a muscular stature in her sprite.
Jarells Sep 12, 2024 @ 12:32pm
eh, i think the character portraits look good, so far, i haven't met all the characters yet, got just over half, but imo characters look far from "woke". just looks like a particular art style.

You're just wrong. allow me to refer you to $200m loss failed concord. MAJORITY of people (important note) don't want to play as ugly characters. They want cool OR attractive. Get over it. its how it is and how it has been forever

anyways i'm out! good discussions!

This game being attractive or not is a matter of opinion. There's people posting saying they love the design. YOU are the one who has an issue with. I personally don't mind them.

Different games are held to different standards for graphics. If a game is promoted as a AAA game the expectation is higher for the graphics. Plenty of games use 8-bit graphics and they do fine.

Concord had waaaayyyy more issues than it just being a matter of it being an unattractive design to some. Talking to you kind of feels like talking to a child about the economy. Price is also a factor. Concord is double the cost. Thus double the expectations for value. It was a hero shooter which has an oversaturated market. This game is far more niche. It has some similar competitors but it's unique enough to separate itself. There are many factors to why Concord failed and it wasn't because it was "woke." People ranting about a game being woke does not matter. If the game is good all of you psychos will be ignored. The issue was Concord was awful -- their CEO was embezzling money instead of investing it into the game.

You thinking it failed because of it being "woke" and unappealing graphics makes me envision you as a resident of Salem during the witch hunting trials. They foolishly believed a witch could not sink in water so they add heavy weights to them and if they drown they're innocent. But you and the rest of the crazy villagers are throwing rocks. Somehow you relate them dying to the collective rocks hitting them and not them literally being dragged to the bottom of the body of water due to the weights attached to them. The rocks didn't help... but they were already going to drown.

It's probably mods may be allowed later. The graphics are hit or miss but many people are fine with them. Personally I don't care. You can't appeal to everyone. There's always going to be someone who doesn't like what you create and people who do.

Concord failed because of a lack of marketing, bad advertising, generic hero shooter, 40 dollar price tag when all the competition is free to play, and then just bad design, including but not limited too: characters, maps and menus/UI.

Trying to chalk about all the failure of concord to just character designs is moronic.

Bold and unusual art styles are uncommon in sims. I dig the character designs a lot--sure, it's cool when all the characters are "traditionally hot" and attractive, but please, doing something different is nice and seeing people cry about it (and calling it woke) is annoying as hell.

There will be more characters added, I'm sure, but I wouldn't stray far from the styles you've already made just to appease people who prefer the same cookie-cutter anime portraits. (Nothing against people who prefer that, I like them too, but for once, seeing neato, different designs and a style I've never seen before should be AT LEAST accepted and not trashed).
