But I don't think it's the height that does it. My theory is that after a certain height, the visual effect for the wall of doom stops being applied. I think it's the void that is doing the damage and killing you when you run up those really tall tracks. Because all of your speed is converted to speed UP instead of FORWARD you are basically brought to a standstill when running up very steep tracks, and the void can quickly catch up and kill you before you reach the top, even if you cannot see it.
The track boost doesn't actually apply very quickly, and I've had the voice overtake me while running on tracks even while on mostly flat ground. The speed rings make it feel a lot faster than it actually is, so if you hop on too early, without enough of a head start on the void, it might catch up and kill you before you really get going.
To climb the rails that go over superstructures, you need to be sure you have enough of a lead on the void to afford the forward-momentum time loss of basically not moving forward for a good few seconds while you climb. I've both made it over them and failed to make it over them at various times, so this is just my guessing based on my experiences.
This.
it was the blue flames that consume the world behind you that you are constantly trying to out-run that killed you.
it's not obvious because the tracks don't catch fire, so you have no feedback that you are being DOT'd. Pay attention to overly vertical tracks, they make you run at a snails pace (80m or less). i've lost a life like that once so it was probably it.
