The devs have gone on record saying that their characters are "just humans with animal heads" and are using the animal aesthetic as shorthand for traits and personalities.
Ah, ok.
However the animal in the game go through period, which is a more human trait. Very few specie of animal IRL have period.
But I did get a Maus vibe where the animal aspect is there to soften impact of the violence and cruelty.
The pope is a giant chicken that lays egg, when eggs are broken its splits in ball of chicken fetuses.
The final boss is the twin beak god. Seems to be a offshoot of those giant skeleton birds and have long neck which are actually used for attacks.
If they are literal humans that would be some extreme body horror we're dealing with as if it wasn't disturbing enough as they are.
Also to be that guy most animal are sentient but humans differ by having sapience in addition.
It's definitely not Earth, with the magic, the colossal carcasses littering the background, and the complete lack of humans even in old places, this place has no humans, just people.
