Has the sound always been muffled for S3&K?
In this collection alone I mean. Only this game sounds muffled compared to the others, and I thought the game sounded more clear prior to the current patch.

I actually prefer the prototype music except for how CNZ music was handled for this version as opposed to the actual sound of the prototype. A shame that the sound is muffled but I can deal with it.

I know what you mean. ICZ Act 1 had a catchy theme.

That is silly. The legality of the game's soundtrack should not affect sound effects as well.
You can't bypass copyright by just lowering the quality either which they don't even need to for tracks that aren't Carnival Night, Ice Cap and Launch Base Zones that got replaced anyway.

The sound being kind of muffled is an old complaint since Origins launched. Though I thought it only seemed to effect the new music they made for Sonic 3 to replace the cut tracks.

I thought that too until I played through Angel Island again and immediately noticed that it sounded muffled. But oddly enough, the later zones did not sound muffled at all. Or it could have just been me. The three notorious zones of course sounded muffled.

Sonic 1, 2 and CD had their BGMs remastered for their 2011 and 2013 rereleases, which are used here in Origins. Sonic 3 never got such a remaster until now, and I guess they never remastered the audio.

I read somewhere that the sound is no longer muffled for Sonic 3. And sure enough it isn't. Yay!

Where did you read that? Because I sure as hell don't hear the difference.

To be fair, it sounds LESS muffled to me than before. The audio sounds cleaner according to one of the users in the link. https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/400536-sonic-origins-plus/80487522

I compared the files in the AWB to the original AWB, and I can say for certain that it has absolutely remained exactly the same. In fact according to Windows, the file has not been updated in this patch.

It sounds corrupted and crackles on the blue sphere stages for me I think.

Perhaps they do match the same, but I do indeed hear a cleaner sound difference. Not like the orginal but cleaner. And I'm not the only one to notice.

Whether it be Sonic 3&K's music files being low quality, or Sonic Frontiers using a beta rendition of a track in its Jukebox, one thing is certain... Sonic Team just seem to be dumb with their audio archives.
Wait, when did this happen with Frontiers? What song?
