To those telling others to play fan ports, ROM hacks, and decomps (also, a good list of what's in this compilation, so you can choose whether you want to buy it)

Preface: If you have time to comment about how you didn't have time to read the post, then actually you do have time to read the post because you took the time to comment. It isn't unruly or anything like that - I just wanted to make sure this was as comprehensive as possible so that people can decide what they want to do before buying Origins, based on what is included in the package and based on what Sega as a company is doing surrounding the compilation's release; of course, this is also sprinkled with my own opinions on how things should be, which you can take as seriously as you please.

The original post is below, please do take the time to read it before giving your take. Who knows, maybe it'll change?

Developers of the Sonic 1 and 2 decompilations, developers of the Sonic 1 Forever and Sonic 2 Absolute ports (which use the decompilations as a base), and the Sonic 3: Angel Island Revisited developer and one of their playtesters, are all in support of Sonic Origins as a project.

If you are telling people that they should instead download and play the decompilations, use the Steam Workshop to play a ROM hack like Sonic 3 Complete, or play one of the various fan ports, you are very clearly missing the point of Sonic Origins as a product, and you are dictating what people do with their money (which is rather impolite in itself - please let people do what they want).

"But you're spending $40/$45 on Genesis ROMs!"

No, you aren't. These are the 2011/2013 mobile ports made by Stealth and Christian Whitehead. Additionally, Sonic 3 & Knuckles is receiving similar treatment and is being developed by Headcannon Studios, including Stealth, which means it will be of very similar quality to the previous ports that are being included in this collection.

In addition to all of this, you are getting:

• A story mode with brand-new animated cutscenes interspersed throughout, written by Ian Flynn[bumbleking.com] with art director Andy from A+Start,
  
• Remastered Sonic CD cutscenes by Brady Hartel,
  
• A boss rush for each game,
  
• A museum, with sound tests, as well as content from the original games' development that was never released to the public before,
  
• A Mission Mode, with a variety of unique missions for each game, and rankings for each, and
  
• 3D modeled, animated menus for each game, depicting their setting and the setpieces you can find in them.

Whether all of this is worth $40/$45 is up to you. If you think it is overpriced, you can wait for a sale and pick it up when you believe it is worth the amount of money you're paying (if it's of any indication, Mania goes on sale pretty often).

...But no, you aren't spending $40/$45 on Genesis ROMs. If you want ROMs, you probably already have them, and if you don't, here's where you go for them.

No, I'm not.[sonic.fandom.com] And before you say "it's the wiki so it's not accurate", there are sources on the page for a reason, and I've used a lot of them in this post.

"But these other ports from these other franchises did better for this price tag!"

Good for you, go buy those ports instead if you want to support them and their efforts!

"Okay, well, what about Denuvo, and the restrictive EULA?"

I'm actually with you there! I hope that in the future, Denuvo is removed, much like it was with Sonic Mania - but this will not prevent me from supporting the franchise that I hold dear. I also believe that the EULA is overly restrictive (especially as a Steam Deck owner), but I'm not sure if they can be properly reinforced with how Steam works as a platform.

It's ultimately up to you if you decide not to get the compilation because of these restrictions, and I support you for doing that; however, this doesn't mean you can prevent others from getting the game if they want to.

"Origins costs too much in my local currency!"

I'm with you there, too! Despite my above arguments, I personally think that Origins is slightly overpriced (I believe it should be about $30 at most), and the prices I have seen in places like Brazil and Ukraine are frankly ridiculous. In those cases, you can use the fan ports, ROM hacks, and other things as an alternative - it's completely up to you what you want to do.

Alternatively, the Digital Deluxe version is 20% off on Fanatical[www.fanatical.com].

"What about the weird DLC lockouts / preorder bonuses? Music, missions, backgrounds...?"

Once again, the value here is subjective, and whether you want to pay extra money for these features is entirely up to you. I personally bought the Digital Deluxe version, though I'm probably not going to buy the Premium & Classic Sound Pack depending on what's in it (and on whether or not you can swap out music in-game). If you think differently, then that's great!

The only thing you miss out on if you don't preorder is a letterbox background in Classic mode... so, personally, I'd moreso complain about how confusing the marketing is.

EDIT 4/27: "What about the fact that the individual versions of Sonic 1, 2, CD, and 3K are getting delisted?"

I'm not a fan of this either, especially with 3K as I'm fairly certain it is the only way to legally get a ROM of the game. However, I personally don't believe this detracts from the value Sonic Origins brings to the table. As always, if you decide not to get Sonic Origins for this reason, that is perfectly valid - it isn't a good decision for Sega to be making and I'm completely in support there.

Because I love this franchise, and I want to see more collections like Sonic Origins.

Also because I spend my money where I want, and you can't tell me to spend it elsewhere without me saying no. :)

By the way, I'm not a "fanboy" - I've gone on record and said that I'm supporting Origins as a project but do not approve of the decisions Sega is making surrounding its release, including

The average consumer won't know how to do these things (and, usually, won't want to do them), and these things are in most cases not possible on a console. Sonic Origins will be available for everyone, and will run with absolutely no prior setup like most games.

Also, to support projects like this, which is what I'm doing along with many other fans.

I came onto this discussion board to positively discuss Sonic Origins as an excited fan that wants to support fan-developed and fan-backed projects like this. Unfortunately, the board is currently flooded with posts that feel hostile towards those who want to support this sort of thing, and none of it feels positive at all. I want to try and change that, even if the hivemind that seems to exist here will probably thwart that effort anyway.

I haven't read this entire thread, but its existence suggests that you are unaware of the abhorrent regional pricing in addition to the despicable DLC and pre-order system (which required a chart with 5 COLUMNS which still did a poor job to convey its purpose) and, last but not least, denuvo.

Honestly, unlike Forces or TSR, I can at least say that there's a certain appeal for a collection like Sonic Origins. It may not be the kind of collection I'd pick up myself since I have access to these games already and have enhanced versions of them already, but I can definitely see, say, Switch owners picking this up considering neither CD nor 3&K are on Switch like they are on Steam.

Yeah, the DLC chart is a problem and the pricing may be a little on the steep side of things especially compared to something like Mega Collection Plus on the PS2, but I do think there's an appeal for a collection like this; it's just that many people such as myself are not a part of that appeal. I do wish the widescreen mode didn't force unlimited lives BTW.

While I see what you mean regarding Forces to an extent, I can say that TSR is a fun game to pick up and play, and the challenges in the story mode are mostly fun, so it has its merits. Origins has a lot more value in comparison though, I agree!
I also agree that there could be more granularity with the lives settings - I rarely find myself on the game over screen in the classic games, though, so it really doesn't affect me all that much or particularly bother me.

It's understandable that this compilation isn't for you and I respect that! I'd say as long as I see less hostility on this discussion board it's a win in my book; it was not a nice thing to see when first loading it up.

Unfortunately from what I've seen from other games I don't see less hostility happening on this discussion board until Denuvo is removed and that won't happen until at the very least a while after release and even that is doubtful from segas history with the program. I do agree though that it would be nice to not have a hostile discussion board for these sonic classics.

I'd say after about a year on the market is a reasonable time frame for the removal of Denuvo. It's just long enough for them to make the majority of their sales but not so long that it would span a significant chunk of the game's lifespan.

Other publishers, such as Capcom, follow a similar trend with their Denuvo enabled titles.
