Is this game worth it for those who don't know a thing about dragon ball?
I've played a bit of this game with a friend through PS5's Share Play feature, and really enjoyed the gameplay, but I know barely anything about the franchise, or characters besides Goku and Vegeta. Does the story mode do a half decent job of getting the player acquainted with the characters and world?

This game is almost dead, don't buy it.
Besides online it has nothing to offer. After only 2 months over 100k people left it.

Bandai as developer is scammy. It's better to watch anime.
Old games like Tenkaichi and Raging blasts are still good, if you don't mind old graphics.

watching the story of OG dragonball and DBZ till frieza saga is probly better then playing any of the games to get to know it.

It's more of a Toy Box of a game meant for those already invested in it. If you want a proper fighting game that happens to have Dragon Ball characters in it, go get FighterZ instead.

If you want proper introduction into the story, without watching the anime, go for Kakarot.

I have over 52 hours of exclusively online, I have fun sometimes then I get mostly Gogetas that ruin my enjoyment
Sure, I've never watched an episode of DBZ

If your looking to learn the story of the game, Kakarot does the better story, it also has nice DLC side stories that do a good job at covering up loose ends. Kakarot does not have alot of super content, so you wont learn much about db super from the game kakarot, but sz also cuts out ALOT.

If you like the gameplay and you're thinking about investing any energy into playing multiplayer, TURN BACK. It's an unpolished sh|tshow.

If you want to experience the story, play Kakarot instead
