The other type are not appearing on your character visually. It is made solely for giving you effects, from just boosting stats like health and damages, to special effects like reducing the opponent moving speed or reducing his ki. And it can be unique to a type of characters, like some items being only equipped by Cyborgs.
So considering the wide range of effects of these items, it can still change the tides of a battle unless there is a huge skill difference. As Hayato suggested above, it would be a good idea to start with the solo content to get some items first.
Although, there is an option for the online battle that disable custom characters, meaning you will only face people who are using characters without any items.
diffrent play modes bro. pvp will have normal or custom battles. normal mode no items that mod stats and custom mode will have items that affect stats
