Customization in Episode Mode?

Some of these fights are pretty tough/cruel. I assumed like prior Sparking games you could use Z-items to help even the playing field but I can't find any options for customization in the story mode. I equipped the correct character with some items but they don't seem to be working.

I'm also kind of confused about this too, doesn't seem like my equips are working even though I'm certain its the character in question that I'm actively using

So far from what I've gathered is that Customization just doesn't work in Episode Mode which is such a shame. Kinda defeats the point of using those items. Most people aren't going to customize the roster for pvp purposes. In the previous games you customized your characters to give you an edge over the insane AI and some of the buffs they get in story mode and other side modes. Here it seems pointless to customize outside of cosmetics. I hope this is subject to change in the future. It sucks to not have this as major content is locked behind tough battle conditions. Lowering the difficulty locks you out of those scenarios too. A bit too punishing. Yes Tenkaichi/Sparking has always been challenging but like I said prior games allowed you to access all the content no matter which of the 5+ difficulties you played on or what Z-items you used. This game has 2 difficulties and swapping to the lower one punishes you. You also get no items to help you. Ont op of the frustratingly slow Map and Menu for the story mode, it makes achieving these secondary objectives super frustrating.

They are right on the money, this is at best a 7/10 game.

As a BT veteran with well into the 1k hours combined (BT1 to 3) this one's "no items in story mode"-policy is a big letdown. The strategy for most what-ifs is "spam Sparking! mode till it dies", which is frustrating and doesn't even work most of the time due to AI being buffed.
Items could make the difference but nope...
Also as someone who just plays casual after work to relife his childhood I will most likely never play online. So the shop's basically useless for me. Got 5 moi Zeni by playing storymode atm and see no reason to spend it on items which doen't even work for me as a non-pvp-casual-noob.

So it seems you have to go into the shop menu, choose customize, then apply them directly to the character version in your specific story. IE. Early Goku items vs Vegeta will not auto transfer to Goku in the Buu arc.

False. They don't work in Episode mode at all.
