Chase change not working on controller?

I am new to Budokai Tenkaichi so I decided to check the tutorial but at the chase change one it doesn't seem to work like the game suggests. Using classic controls.

Same. I tried the 3 attacks and right stick flicked left like it says and nothing happens.

Got to work once in 5 mins. Cant replicate it again

Edit: after the 3 hits you can delay for a half second it will work

I was able to do this wiht the Xbox Controller after several tries, but it just doesn't seem like it's something that I would ever use in battle because of how clunky/inconsistent it is to get the chase change input to register properly.
