Online, any reason to play a base character instead of his stronger transformations?
Yeah, I wonder. Online, for example, why I should play basic Goku instead of his last and stronger transformation?
Two players with the same skill, of course the one with the stronger transformation has an advantage against his opponent from the beginning.

The developers actually thought about this:
If you start the battle off with a character in base or un-fused form, you actually get a damage bonus.

Starting as the character at max power won't make you that much stronger, so it's recommended to just play as the Base form character and have fun transforming to get a power boost.

That isn't to say you get NO power boost if you decide to play as SSB Goku right off the bat, but if you start as Base, then transform into SSB you would be overall stronger.

Really awesome mechanic that encourages the player to actually transform.

I mean you could just pick Whis or fusion? lol
After release, people are gonna figure out which characters are the best to start out and what transformations mid battle is the most advantageous.

It's something that can't really be guessed before release.

Edit: Super Trunks was made to be a good pick because he starts with a high ki and could change to Armor Trunks who was a good character.

Transforming actually buffs your character
Same as fusing gives you more healthbar than spawning as the fusion
Also it costs less points so you can build a stronger/better team

If you play as a base character, you can end up with a stronger team.

Example - If I chose goku with his last transformation, I'll spend 10 points out of 15 (it's just an example) and won't be able to add vegeta with his last transformation that theorically costs 10 points as well.

But if I pick goku base that would cost 5 points and transform him along the battle, I can also pick vegeta base 5 points and do the same

This is probably a good thing, drawing in a new audience is a net positive. I mean, it's 17 years old at this point.

Starting off with base forms is advantageous because it ultimately gives you buffs for transforming, which makes them stronger than picking the transformation outright. Fusions are the same way as well and you can end up with an absurd health pool (6-7 bars of health in this game) and damage output if you manually fuse instead of just selecting the fusion from character select.

I think this is the main advantage, the point system sounds great in theory, we'll have to see if it holds up in practice.

Offline you get to do whatever you want which is how it should be, glad we are allowed to have fun in a GAME.

In BT3, the base character after transforming in the fight gets a damage buff, making him stronger compared to if you use select the transformation in the selection screen. The same thing happens with fusions with the particularity of not only recovering all your health, but you can also get like 3 more bars of maximum hp. for SZ. This could help for the point mechanics. like base midku that costs 5 points but you can transform it into ssj in the middle of the fight, but if you select ssj midku from the selection screen he will cost 8 points

btw. do I remember right,
that in DB Budokai Tenkaichi 3, u also filled ur KI-bars, when u transformed..?
I just saw, that it's not the case here for "sparking 0", at least not in the footage I saw...

like everyone else stated when your base you got more advantages for example waiting until a certain point that your health bar is at and then transforming basically can give you more health and that in itself is an advantage compared to some dummy using gogeta out of the gate getting his ass whooped and having that set health bar the entire fight. Also like everyone else stated damage buffs as well. And finally i dont know if this applies to non ranked online but the point system the implemented so it not out of pocket, choosing a base character with the ability to transform would cost less than the full out transformation.
