Don't go for fists immediately. Be like Goku. Learn your opponent weaknesses and use them at the very end against them.
Check this video. Dude was using Revenge Counter quite a lot during Z-vanish. I learnt that, and was ready for another one of those with Super-Perception at the end of the battle.

at 1:14 notice how he (opponent) has quite a lot of Ki and he allowed me to punch him. He used his 2 skill count. It caught me off guard. But I kept that in mind.
Don't you look at the Ki-bars and how enemy is doing too? That's the main thing you gotta do.
The Z-vanish is so easy to do in this game, that when I notice I'm running low on Ki then it's better to get hit from behind if they are about to throw a Super attack at you, because when flying away, you still have some Ki left to Z-vanish at the right moment.

but side step just seems so slow sometimes at least at Z rank
higher rank fights just suck ass in general, because you'll soon run into people who will super counter the first thing you do and its just not fun lol
