Good to know. Like I said, I know nothing of Dragon Ball lore. Tbh, I always thought of it as a bit cringe like Naruto. But this game is just that good of a fighting game that it doesn't matter, and a great way to introduce new people like myself to the story. I'd probably watch some of the show if it wasn't so massive and bloated with fluff content. Yu-gi-oh did the same thing, but it just didn't seem as much (at least pre 5D's, I haven't watched anything newer than GX). Also I heard GT is kinda garbage except for the villain. Heard there's an abridged version, but problems with that one too. Guess I just need an episode list of the most absolute necessary episodes/specials/movies and go from there.
Dragon Ball is sort of the progenitor of shounen anime post-2000. Kishimoto, Naruto's creator, was heavily influenced Dragon Ball. There are cringey parts, but anime itself is cringey by nature more or less depending on who you ask.
Naruto, Bleach, One Piece, Jojo, Gintama, Inuyasha, etc. would go on to be the inspiration to modern stuff, like Kimetsu no Yaiba, and Jujutsu Kaisen. So really, mainstream fighting shounen anime is kind of DB's child.
As for Yugioh, if you're not passionate about the game irl, it's probably not worth watching as a good shounen anime. It's too long and serves as an expensive commercial for the real game. The themes and tropes present aren't very unique either. Though, consensus says that 5DS is generally one of the better ones. I also watched Zexal, Arc-V, and some of Vrains.
Zexal took too much inspiration from DM but with a less likeable (though perhaps more relatable) protagonist.
Arc-V has a cool theme, but the overstayed tournament arc near the end really put a bad taste in everyone's mouth.
I plan on finishing Vrains one day, only done with S1, but so far, and from what I've read about the later seasons, it's good, and if you're familiar with older Yugioh, it makes an effort to present itself as different and does it in nuanced ways, though to varying degrees of success depending on who you ask.
A man of culture I see
Hahaha, peasants, I'm giving you a look of superiority for I have read the manga.
These damn manga readers again xD
Recommend getting into Dragon Ball via the original series (Young Goku) and go from there. Kai condenses stuff, so if you are worried about bloat watch that after. Super is honestly kind of bad. Art style is far worse, story is bordering on nonsensical (even more so than usual DBZ standards). Also watch with English voices because they are far superior to 90% of the Japanese voice actors.
As for the game, the story is brutally difficult but absolutely doable. I've seen my fair share of input reading broken AI in fighting games (MK9 Shao Kahn... SCV Kilik). The main issue people have is that the online is hilariously imbalanced to the point of ridiculousness. You see nothing but the same chars being spammed repeatedly in the same way, and many chars are borderline unviable.
Even aside from the spam, there are a few mechanics that are questionable and need reworks, like super counter resulting in actual cutscenes for 5 minutes of vanish spam for one person to run out of ki to get hit with a full combo that could actually decide the match.
