Auto-defense on my characters

Why are my characters defending by themselves? I drop the controller, and they automatically defend against enemy attacks by holding the circle, which is the normal defense.

I played split-screen with a friend at their house, and the same thing happened.

I thought it could be my controller, but it works fine in other games. My characters only defend at the exact moment the enemy attacks.

That's the battle assist.
You can change the settings in the pause menu.
